Really sorry to hear of the death of a promising public health colleague. Road safety, ironically, is one of the biggest threats to many in the field.

We always met on the Weekly Yellow Fever Partners’ Technical Forum where he gave us updates on yellow fever signals around the world. Then suddenly the shocking news filtered through that Elvis had passed-on while on trip to his native Cameroon! May God grant him eternal rest and to his family fortitude to bear this huge loss.

Elvis, my brother, I am in shock after hearing about your premature exit. Thoughts of the moments we shared during our internship at HQ in 2018 will remain with me always. Adieu brother. Louis

Since I have heard that we have lost you Elvis, I have been thinking of you every day and what an unbelievable loss your family, friends and the populations you were so passionate to help, have suffered. I remember you as such a kind, curious, thoughtul, enthusiastic and all around wonderful colleague. I was enjoying hear from time to time what you were up to, even if I did not see you again in person after leaving WHO. My heart is broken for all the opportunities you were not able to seize, as I am sure you would have embraced them to the fullest. Thank you for the moments we've shared in the outbreak team, I will miss knowing that you are around. You will be remembered.

We only met casually and briefly, but he was a pleasant, intelligent young man with such a bright future. My prayers are with his family.

Our first encounter

I met Elvis after being introduced to him by a colleague at the WHO HIV department in Geneva. He had wanted to get some insights on adolescent HIV. We met at the café and what struck me during our discussions was his desire to engage, to learn and share stories and insights. He really cared about young people and the challenges they faced in accessing services. We continued to communicate as he embarked on his Ph.D and was particularly interested in adherence to ART and the central role of adolescent friendly services in promoting adherence. Elvis was gentle yet passionate, patient yet persistent. He was someone with a goal and huge drive. His passing is still a shock. Road injury is the number one cause of deaths in adolescent males globally. Elvis would more than support an initiative to reduce this. Hope an initiative on this could be done in his dear memory.

Every death is too soon but this one is particularly... I am deeply saddened with the passing of our colleague Elvis Chem. We had never met but I am sure we shared the same ideals and vision for a better, more just, more equitable and healthier world. My sincere condolences for his family and friends... Elviso, I was in disbelieve when I heard to news of your departure from the surface of the earth. You were a kind and charismatic person and a good friend. As a friend I am terribly hurt and it is hard to imagine what your family must be going through. Your departure is a huge loss to the Cameroonian community, the scientific community and to the world at large. Rest well Brother! ~Bona

I was informed of this unfortunate incident by a close relative of El is, having never met him personally, but his story was so touching that when I again read of it on the Open Dreams Facebook page, I felt l couldn't just flip over without writing this post mortem word. I pray dearly that though your earthly endeavours may have been cut at the prime of life, may you be received in the life of the hereafter where demise is history.
